Whitehall Mystery Game Review https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/whitehall-mystery/ https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/whitehall-mystery/#respond Tue, 04 Feb 2020 14:00:04 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=articles&p=17986

Welcome to Whitehall

The year is 1888. The place: Whitehall, in the east end of London.

A killer is on the loose, leaving a trail of dead bodies behind him. He surfaces only to strike, then disappears back into the shadows. Investigators are on his trail, working through clues to capture the murderer before he can claim his fourth victim.

Whitehall Mystery is a one-versus-many game of hidden movements and social deduction. One player takes the role of Jack the Ripper, while up to three other players play as Investigators with London’s Metropolitan Police Service, working together to track Jack down.

Whether playing as Jack or as an Investigator, the game will carry you through up to four phases of a single, macabre night. If Jack is able to reach all four of his murder sites, he wins the game. If the Investigators capture or surround him, or if Jack fails to reach a victim in time, they win.

Setting up the Game

Whitehall Mystery is played on a square board that depicts a street map of the east end of London in 1888. Buildings and streets are illustrated in sepia tones, while The River Thames and St. John’s Park Lake are shown in muted blues, giving the board an old-world feel.

Hanabi Game Review https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/hanabi/ https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/hanabi/#respond Mon, 08 Jul 2019 16:00:38 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=reviews&p=13362

As most card games and the cliché go, you can only play the cards you’re dealt. But what if you don’t know what those cards are? In that case, you’d be playing Hanabi.

Hanabi is the Japanese word for fireworks, and the goal of this cooperative game is to construct five different sequences of fireworks by playing the appropriate cards in order. The deck contains five suits, each represented by a different color. Each suit has 10 cards - three 1s, two 2s, 3s, and 4s, and a lone 5.  Shuffle the deck and deal four or five cards to each player (depending on how many people are playing). It all sounds easy enough.

Now comes the beginning of the hard part: don’t look at your cards. Rather, pick them up facing away from yourself. You will mess this up your first time. It’s counterintuitive. When you do look at your cards, scrap that deal, shuffle and re-deal as your friends remind you that picking up your hand is still the easy part of the game.

The person with the most colorful outfit starts the game. On each player’s turn, they choose one of three options:

  1. Give a clue.
  2. Discard a card.
  3. Play a card.

When giving…

Pyramid of Pengqueen Game Review https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/pyramid-of-pengqueen/ https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/pyramid-of-pengqueen/#respond Mon, 24 Jun 2019 15:34:08 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=reviews&p=13140

There’s a tale of the lost Pyramid of Pengqueen that is full of treasures. This has piqued the interest of some talented penguin adventurers. After months of searching they finally found the secret entrance hidden in the kitchen of their old school! After following the path down into a massive underground cave they found standing in the middle of the Pyramid of Pengqueen.

The penguins gathered their courage and entered the pyramid but were trapped when the gate slammed shut behind them. They looked around in fear and heard a frightening sound, something was shuffling and moaning off in the distant shadows, then they heard a voice whisper to them…

“Foolish penguins, I may be old, but I still have the power to drag you down into my tomb for all eternity.”

They awakened the Pengqueen and now their only chance of escape is to move fast and collect a specific set of magical treasures which will break the mummy’s curse and allow the adventurers to escape with their lives...and the treasure!

How does it play?

This is a hidden movement press your luck game. It’s set up so that one player is the Pengqueen, the mummy penguin queen, and the other players are the treasure hunting penguins. There are two sides,…

What In The Wild Game Review https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/what-in-the-wild/ https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/what-in-the-wild/#comments Sat, 01 Sep 2018 02:02:55 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=articles&p=9076 Wilderness In A Box

What In The Wild is a card game designed by Karen Cleveland and published by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It contains 120 cards that are a mixture of Species, Food (sunlight), Water, Space, and Shelter. It comes with instructions for 5 different games using the cards but they all have the same theme of matching Species Cards with different resource types. The instructions for each game begin with special directions as to why you are playing the game: you may be assisting a biologists, or be a member of a nature club, or you’ve been placed in charge of your very own wildlife area. Whatever the case, it is very important that you succeed at your task.

What in the Wild box

What In The Wild is filled with colorful, real life photos that draw the eye. The symbols are easy to understand and match, which is the heart of this game. Each unique ruleset is based on these Species and Resources matching to create all sorts of combos. The instructions start with a simple game where you match 2 cards and build up to a game where you’re building habitats that require matching 4…
